Transport and Cohesion Policy

As the completion of the single market and enlargement beckon, transport has an important role to play in EU efforts to reduce regional disparities. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) allocated around 15 billion euros worth of aid to transport infrastructure projects in the 1994-1999 programming period, whilst half of the 1993-1999 budget for the Cohesion Fund (around 8 billion euros) was reserved for projects linked to trans-European networks for transport (TENs).

In this context, the Commission communication offers concrete proposals for achieving synergies between the common transport policy (CTP) and cohesion policy, in order that transport may contribute as efficiently as possible to the development of lagging regions.
