Bringing the digital economy to West Wales and the valleys: Commission approves EUR 100 million of regional funds for a major broadband project
The European Commission has approved an investment of €100 million from the European Regional Development fund (ERDF) to ensure that all businesses and residential premises in West Wales and the Valleys have access to next generation broadband by 2015. The project directly contributes to reaching the objectives of the ‘Digital Agenda for Europe’ in terms of basic broadband access and Next Generation Access and opens a door to the digital economy in this region.
Commenting on the decision, Commissioner for Regional Policy Johannes Hahn said “Projects like this will have huge benefits for businesses and citizens. This initiative in particular will allow Wales to seize the opportunities offered by the digital economy. This is a perfect example of how Regional Policy can help Europe's recovery and directly contribute to meeting the goals of the EU’s growth agenda, ‘Europe 2020’. Providing fast and reliable access to the internet will play a vital role in helping regions in their economic development.”
