Shared Challenges, common solutions – 20 URBACT projects present results

In 2002, the EU, with a view to promoting balanced, dynamic urban development, created URBACT - a European exchange and learning network promoting sustainable urban development through the sharing of good practice, and cooperation between cities to find and share innovative, sustainable and integrated solutions to their common urban challenges.

Today, URBACT brings together some 300 cities in 29 countries; and in September 2011, 20 sponsored projects are presenting their results after a three year programme of learning and exchange. The projects have collaborated to research and test solutions to challenges such as preservation of cultural heritage, regeneration of disadvantaged neighbourhoods, stimulation of innovation and creativity, active inclusion etc.

For more information on the solutions offered by individual projects - such as:

  • 'REDIS - Restructuring districts into science quarters';
  • 'OPENCities - Openness and the competitive advantage of diversity'; or
