EU-China Mayors' Forum and the EU-China regional policy dialogue
(20 September 2012)
In the framework of the EU-China Mayors' Forum and the EU-China regional policy dialogue launched in 2006 between the Regional Policy DG and the Chinese National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), the Regional Policy DG, the Committee of the Regions and Eurocities organised the thematic seminar "Governing sustainable urban development: Experiences from China and the EU", last 19 September.
During the seminar, high-level officials of Huai'an, Birmingham, Espoo and Hamburg, practitioners and academics presented to a large audience (more than 100 participants) a number of case studies from cities on how to bring new forms of governance to respond to current urban challenges.
As underlined by representatives from China Center for Urban Development and Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, at present, Chinese cities are in a new stage of accelerated and overall transformation and are looking to European cities experiences on topics like urban-rural cooperation, development of small and medium-size cities, regional innovation eco-systems, low-carbon and eco-building technologies.
The event was part of the EU-China Mayors’ Forum, held on 19 and 20 September 2012 in Brussels. This Forum is the first annual flagship event of the EU-China Urbanisation Partnership. It got together EU and Chinese Mayors, local decision-makers, city planners, business and NGOs willing to share experience in moving towards sustainable, integrated and efficient solutions.
