ERDF and CF - appropriate tools for the development of regions with specific geographical features

A recent Study - Relevance and effectiveness of ERDF and Cohesion Fund support to regions with specific geographical features – islands, mountainous and sparsely populated, covering both 2000 – 2006 and 2007 – 2013 programme periods, demonstrated the crucial role played by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the Cohesion Fund (CF) in such regions. It concluded that ERDF and CF are appropriate tools for the development of regions with specific geographical features. Moving beyond infrastructure development as main objective, setting up policy priorities and governance attuned to the assets and needs of the areas, both funds can provide the necessary funding, flexibilities and focus to encourage the realisation of effective projects.
