Transport

The EU has created a legal framework in the transport sector aimed at facilitating the free movement of persons and goods across the Union. According to the EC Treaty, the measures put in place within this framework include:

  • common rules applicable to international transport either to or from the territory of a Member State or passing through the territory of one or more Member States
  • the conditions under which non-resident carriers may operate transport services within a Member State
  • measures to improve transport safety as well as other appropriate provisions

The Common Transport Policy not only promotes a Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) across the EU, but also supports a sustainable transport network, taking into account environmental considerations. TEN-T covers road transport, waterways and seaports as well as the European high-speed rail network.
