The INTERREG III initiative was an integral part of the European Union's (EU) Regional Policy 2000-06.

INTERREG III set out to improve economic and social cohesion by supporting cross-border, transnational and interregional cooperation. The goal was to promote balanced development across the EU.

Drawing finance from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), the initiative focused on developing actions to strengthen links across borders between the Member States and between the EU and its non-member neighbours.

The European Territorial Cooperation Objective has replaced the INTERREG initiative in the Regional Policy programming period for 2007-13.
