Extending Bucharest’s metro service for better urban mobility

  • 17 November 2017

To better connect the Romanian capital area, this project extended the Bucharest metro by 1.89 km and added two new metro stops.

As part of a comprehensive update and expansion of Bucharest’s infrastructure, this project aims to better connect the city via public transportation. Specifically, the project saw the city’s Metro Line 4 extended by 1.89 km, connecting District 1, including North Bucurest, Bazilescu Park and the Strănleşti area, with the city centre. Along this new stretch of line, the project also added two stations: Laminorului Metro Station and Străuleşti Metro Station.

The project is one component to a larger investment in the refurbishment of the entire Metro Line 4.

Improving urban mobility

By promoting sustainable urban mobility in Bucharest, this project aims to help improve the city’s air quality and, as a result, improve the quality of life for local residents. Furthermore, by providing a better connection between the outer neighbourhoods and the city centre, the extension of the metro is also expected to have a positive impact on local businesses and tourism.

A growing network

The Bucharest Metro originally opened in 1979 and, along with the regional transit system, covers the entire Bucharest region. The metro carries an average of 500 000 passengers per weekday. The 71.35-kilometre system includes four lines and 53 stops.

Line 4 is currently the shortest – and the newest – metro line, running from Gara de Nord to Străulești and running along Grivitei and Bucurestii Noi avenues. The Străulești station is located near the north-western border of the city and includes a park and ride lot. Its main purpose – and the key goal of Line 4 in general – is to encourage people working in the centre of Bucharest to park their cars outside the city and to use public transportation for their commutes.

In addition to the extension of Line 4, plans are in the works to extend Line 2 and add four new lines – including one that connects the city centre with the airport.

Part of the TEN-T Programme

The project is part of the EU’s TEN-T programme, which aims to improve mobility across the EU by supporting the construction and upgrade of transport infrastructure. Financial support goes towards the realisation of important transport infrastructure projects that are in line with the EU’s overarching goal of using mobility to promote competitiveness, employment and cohesion. Funded projects are happening in every Member State and cover all modes of transportation – including air, rail, road and maritime.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Metro Line 4 Extension 2 Section Parc Bazilescu (PS Zarea) – Straulesti – Phase 2” is EUR 72 230 862, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 34 204 905 through the “Large Infrastructure” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period.
