New medical equipment boosts health services in Grudziądz

  • 20 October 2015

A fully equipped haemodynamic lab with its own contrast enhanced MR angiography machine and computed tomography apparatus is enabling doctors in Grudziądz to run life saving emergency procedures for myocardial infarction patients.

We are now fully equipped to provide the best possible care for our patients. Thanks to this project our hospital became one of the region’s leader in health care standards. We have been able to significantly reduce the waiting time for cardiovascular procedures and to provide an early intervention when needed.

Marek Nowak, hospital director general

Up until mid-2009, patients with cardiac diseases in Grudziądz, a city of 100 000 inhabitants in north central Poland, had to travel almost 70 km to receive basic cardiac treatment like angioplasty, angiography or coronary.

Grudziądz Regional Hospital lacked a haemodynamic lab with necessary equipment to run these procedures. Without such equipment it was impossible to conduct proper cardiovascular disease diagnosis or to run life-saving medical intervention until 2009.

Better access to specialised procedures

The main aim of the project was to buy, install and operate cardiovascular medical devices such as computer tomograph (CT), contrast enhanced MR angiography apparatus (CE-MRA) and a coronarography machine. With the support of EU funding 10 new professional medical machines have been bought.

Today the haemodynamic lab consists of three parts. One is equipped with peripheral blood vessel testing machines, the other serves as a room for coronary and angioplasty, the third one is intended for overall cardiovascular system tomographic diagnosis.

Since its opening more then 2 500 patients have been tested with CT while around 2 000 cardiology wards patients underwent angiography, coronarography and coronaroplasty.

Higher health care standards

The project led to an increase in the specialised medical procedures which equals better patients’ safety and higher health service standards in the region. As a result, a reduction of disability and mortality rates due to cardiovascular diseases have been noted while 33 new jobs have been created from the project.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Haemodynamic lab equipment in Doctor Władysław Biegański Regional Special Hospital in Grudziądz” is EUR 2 475 520, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 1 609 088 from the Operational Programme “Kujawsko-Pomorskie” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
