The development of a regional airport near the city of Lublin is improving accessibility to eastern Poland for tourists and business people. The entire region is set to benefit long-term as the airport is expected to enhance the region’s economy and make it a more attractive place to invest.

The airport is situated about 10 km east of the city and has the capacity to cater for up to 1.4 million passengers every year, and peak flow of 720 passengers an hour. In 2015, about 364 000 passengers are expected to arrive and depart from the airport.
The project provided for a range of structures, facilities and equipment required for the smooth and efficient running of a modern airport. Building work therefore included:
a passenger terminal with offices;runways, together with aircraft bays and taxiways;aprons and de-icing stations;aeronautical lighting systems, floodlighting and a power supply network;premises for the fast-track handling of passengers and vehicles; andthe airport fire station and fuel storage facilities.The investment also paid for the airport to be connected to various public utilities such as mains water, the sewerage network, electricity and telecommunications. Technical equipment and software necessary for airport operations and security were also purchased. In addition, the airport has generated about 100 new jobs since opening.
Investment in this project has been reduced by 45 % compared to the original costing. This is due to the fact that the actual number of passengers handled by the airport is around 45 % less than the maximum capacity.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Regional airport expansion: Airport Lublin” is EUR 53 481 193, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 31 731 525 from the Operational Programme “Lubelskie” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Transport”.
