The construction of a second passenger terminal at the Polish airport of Gdańsk and modernization of existing infrastructure ensures higher passenger traffic and an increased number of operations, thus accompanying the region’s economic development.

This initiative involves the construction of a second passenger terminal and an apron at Gdańsk Lech Wałęsa Airport so as to anticipate the passenger traffic growth forecast in the region. The airport is one of eight in Poland part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T).
The second terminal, or T2, which has three storeys and an underground level, houses the airside, which includes waiting areas and baggage sorting, and the landside, with check-in areas, airline offices, and catering establishments and services. It also includes: renovation works in terminal T1 to adapt it to a two-terminal system, the construction of an apron, with 15 aircraft stands and an internal taxiway.
A notable increase in activity
This major scheme is implemented in parallel with another EU-funded project, “Gdańsk Airport – Modernisation of airside infrastructure”. The renovated airport is now able to create new connections and increase air-traffic safety. It already saw a noticeable increase in passenger frequency, from 2.5 million to 5 million from 2012 onwards, and 30 operations per hour are now being conducted. Main beneficiaries of this new infrastructure are passengers and carriers who use the airport. Moreover, 33 jobs were created during the implementation phase of the project.
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Gdańsk airport – construction of second passenger terminal with infrastructure and expansion and modernisation of airport and port infrastructure” is EUR 57 357 781, of which the EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 20 244 830 from the Operational Programme “Infrastructure and Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority axis “TEN-T road and air transport network”.
