Extension of Warsaw’s Metro Line 2 improves urban transport services

  • 09 May 2018

The extension of Warsaw’s Metro Line 2 and the purchase of new rolling stock increases the availability of environment-friendly public transport in the Polish capital. This project is stage 3 of the line’s extension and provides for 5.8 km of new track, plus two new west-bound stations and three east-bound stations. 17 new metro trains are to be purchased as part of the investment package, 15 of which replace old rolling stock.

Construction work is planned to start in early 2019 and be completed by 2022. The project continues construction of Warsaw’s metro line, which has been ongoing for several years. Related schemes have also been co-financed by the European Union.

A strategic goal for construction of the metro is to maintain and increase the share of environment-friendly transport available to Warsaw residents and those visiting the city. In particular, the metro provides a low emission public transport service which should encourage commuters to leave their cars at home.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Construction of the Warsaw metro line II along with the purchase of the rolling stock – stage III” is EUR 818 342 490, with the EU’s Cohesion Fund contributing EUR 448 172 899 through the “Infrastructure and Environment” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Development of low emission public transport in cities”.
