Faster trips facilitated on coast-bound rail link
High-speed train travel in south-western Spain is close to becoming a reality. A project is in hand to build a new 70 km stretch of railway, designed to increase capacity and accelerate journeys between the provinces of Seville and Cadiz.
The work focuses on track and infrastructure, including construction of four train stations – the main one being one at Jerez de la Frontera Airport. The goal is to upgrade a section of the Seville-Cadiz line to carry trains at speeds of 200 to 220 km/h. It is part of the broader EU Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) initiative for high-speed rail interoperability on the Iberian Peninsula.
70 km of new track
The overall objective for the line between Seville and Cadiz is to upgrade and complete the high-speed railway network in Andalusia. This will improve links between some of the region's main cities and strengthen connections to the rest of Spain and Europe.
Work on the Seville to Cadiz line has been divided into four sections. Section three, which runs from Utrera to Jerez Airport, is itself divided into various subsections. These are: Utrera-Las Cabezas de San Juan; Las Cabezas de San Juan-Lebrija; Lebrija-El Cuervo; El Cuervo-Jerez Airport; plus the train station at Jerez Airport. Each section and subsection is an independent unit, both technically and economically.
In section three, just under 70 km of high-speed rail track will be built between the town of Utrera and the city of Jerez de la Frontera. Specific work involves construction of the track bed, the double track, electrification and installations over the entire length of this line. A new train station will also be constructed at Jerez de la Frontera Airport, located some eight kilometres north-east of the city.
Benefits for three million
When completed, the project will deliver four new stations, 10 viaducts, 19 overpasses and 11 underpasses. Trains will be able to run at speeds of 200-220 km/h, thanks to improvements such as a straightened track and fewer level crossings. Doubling of the track between Dos Hermanas and Cadiz will also increase the line's capacity, reducing journey times and enhancing regularity.
Between 2008 and 2038, the project should deliver major time savings for passengers and reduce fuel consumption. It will also contribute to environmental sustainability, notably cutting the noise and pollution of rail travel in the region.
Around three million people are expected to benefit from this project, especially those living in the cities of Seville, Jerez de la Frontera and Cadiz. An estimated 540 jobs will be created during the implementation phase and over 250 once the new line is fully operational.
Total and EU funding
The project “Seville-Cadiz high-speed line: section between Utrera and Jerez” has a total eligible budget of EUR 264 696 000, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 149 497 000 for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
