Bypassing the city of Malaga

The project plans to construct 21 km of motorway to bypass the city of Malaga to the west with the aim of reducing traffic congestion and better linking all transport modes in the area.

The building of this new section, which will both begin and end on the Autovía del Mediterráneo A-7, will lead to improved connections both within the immediate area with the rest of the country and with Europe.

21 kilometres of new motorway

This project falls under the Plan Estratégico de Infraestructuras y Transporte (Strategic Infrastructure and Transport Plan - PEIT), with the road forming part of the trans-European transport network (TEN-T) A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo.

In concrete terms, the project consists of the construction of 21 km of motorway, made up of two carriageways, each with two 3.5 metre-wide lanes, a 10-metre central reservation and outside and inside verges. The works also include the construction of nine viaducts, 12 overpasses, 27 underpasses and a 1 250-metre tunnel, as well as the transversal and longitudinal drainage, traffic signs, lighting and barriers.

The overall project has been divided into four sections, all technically and financially independent of each other: the link between the AP-7 motorway and highway MA – 417; the link between highway MA-417 and the A-357 Autovía del Guadalhorce; the link between the A-357 Autovía del Guadalhorce and Highway C-3310 and finally, the link between Highway C-3310 and the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo.

Improving connections, reducing travel time and costs

The main beneficiaries of the project are the 850 000 inhabitants of the metropolitan area of Malaga, although all travellers who pass through the city of Malaga on the A-7 Autovía del Mediterráneo will also benefit.

The project will also lead to better connections with the rest of the country and with the rest of Europe and thus is likely to have a noticeable impact on tourism. On top of this, it will further benefit the local economy through the creation of 767 new jobs during the implementation phase and 25 during the operational phase. Additionally, it has been estimated that, between 2010 and 2038, the project will lead to substantial time savings as well as savings of €375 million in reduced fuel consumption.

In relation to environmental sustainability, apart from the reduced fuel consumption, the project will also lead to reduced noise, pollution and greenhouse emissions. In addition, as foreseen in the project’s environmental impact study, a number of measures will be implemented to minimise the negative= impact of the construction on the environment.
