CELBI (Celulose Beira Industrial, SA) is a firm that operates in the field of production of paper. The company belongs to the group Altri, SGPS, SA. CELBI has currently a significant share in the European and Iberian market of paper. It employs some 350 workers in Portugal.
The project consists of modernising and expanding the production facilities of CELBI in Figueira da Foz (NUTS III “Baixo Mondego”), a city in the Centro (Convergence NUTS II) region of Portugal: the production capacity of CELBI will grow from the current 310 000 ton/year to 550 000 ton/year. It is foreseen that its annual turnover will grow from EUR 125 000 000 (2005) to some EUR 215 000 000 (2011). The ERDF contribution will mainly co-finance the acquisition of new machinery.
What are the project likely benefits ?
The project will provide the most advanced technological solutions for factory equipment, technology and infrastructures (buildings, facilities). It is expected that the project will contribute positively for the following main objectives of the Portuguese NSRF and "Competitiveness Factors" OP: increasing knowledge and technological development and innovation and renewal of the enterprise model and of specialisation patterns. The project is expected to lead to the creation of 530 jobs, mostly in the forestry production.
What are the project likely environmental benefits ?
In terms of environmental benefits, the project will allow for a substantial upgrading of the CELBI industrial facilities. It is expected that pollution emissions and overall energy consumption will be reduced. New renewable energy sources will be stimulated by the project. It is estimated that 8% of the total investment cost will be dedicated to environment-type investments.
