Modernising a section of the Wileńska station-National Stadium tram line improves clean urban transport in Warsaw

Upgrading a 3 km-long section of tramline that links Wileńska station with the National Stadium and the Washington roundabout has improved clean urban transport links within the city of Warsaw. In addition, the purchase of 30 low-floor trams as part of the scheme has delivered better services along this busy route.

The route that has undergone the revamp intersects with other tram lines, including two that are very heavily used, connecting Praga district and the city centre. There are also significant links at this location with bus and rail services. Upgrading the line has therefore improved the operation of public transport as a whole. Regional and suburban connections into Warsaw have benefited as well, particularly on the rail network which is accessed at Wileńska station.

Meeting new demands

The modernisation scheme was undertaken, in part, due to a fundamental change in the tram line’s role within the city’s transport network. Following the construction and entry into service of the new 55 000 capacity National Stadium, the line became much more heavily used. Crowds rely on the line to visit the venue and the existing infrastructure simply could not cope with the extra demand. The fleet of 30 low-floor trams, bought as part of the project, further improve services to local people by boosting capacity. Low-floor trams do not have entry steps, which improves accessibility for disabled and infirm users.

The scheme replaced the existing tram lines and installed new ones using state-of-the-art construction methods. Other works included modernising overhead lines and revamping two traction sub-stations.

Looking after passengers

In addition, passenger platforms were extended and lifted. The platforms are also fitted with ramps to make them more accessible for disabled and elderly passengers. Signage for visually impaired and blind people has been installed in the form of platform-edge markings, including tactile surface indicators and dual-coloured warning strips. Plus, mudguards have been installed to protect passengers where there are no shelters.

All stations open to normal traffic have been furnished with information display boards and public address systems. These provide real-time information on departure times as well as the location of the low-floor trams and general details about the operation of the city’s public transport network.


Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Modernisation of the Wileńska station-National Stadium-Washington roundabout tram line and purchase of 30 low-floor trams” is EUR 69 410 414, of which the EU’s Cohesion Fund is contributing EUR 45 884 695 from the Operational Programme “Infrastructure and the Environment” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period under the priority axis "Environment-friendly Transport".
