Final section of cross-regional highway completed
A new provincial road some 5.6 km long is being built between two cities in Silesia, southern Poland. It completes the DTS-WEST section between Zabrze-Gliwice, totalling just over 11 km.
The project involves construction of a range of major engineering structures, among them two bridges over water. It is the culmination of a multi-annual investment project that started in 1986, aimed at building a cross-regional highway with a total length of 31.3 km between Katowice and Gliwice.
Upper Silesian Metropolis
Both Zabrze and Gliwice form part of the Upper Silesian Metropolis, centred around the city of Katowice. They lie on the north-western side of the metropolis and have populations of around 189 000 and 197 000 respectively.
Co-funded by the EU, the project comprises construction on the main route from ul. Portowa to ul. Kujawska. Measuring 5.565 km in total, it includes single carriageway with two lanes in each direction. The two bridges that cross over water are located along ul. Orlickiego over the River Kłodnica, and along the cross-regional highway, over the River Kłodnica and flood plain areas. The project is also building a further seven bridges, such as along national road No. 88, one tunnel almost 500 m long, three footbridges (also for cyclists), seven intersections and four crossroad junctions.
Additional infrastructure under construction includes more than 3.5 km of footpaths and 1.3 km of paths for pedestrians and cyclists. To protect the environment, around 5 km of acoustic barriers are also being erected.
The project’s implementation phase is expected to create almost 1 800 jobs. Śląskie Province is the owner of the property and the constructed provincial road. Gliwice, as the district municipality through which the road runs, has responsibility for its administration.
Total investment and EU funding
