The project is for the first operational phase of a wider scheme to improve the national trunk road Strada Statale 640 di Porto Empedocle between Agrigento and the A19 motorway. The SS 640 runs north-east from Agrigento and passes through the town of Caltanissetta before reaching the A19, which links Palermo to Catania.

In addition to upgrading a section of the SS 640, works for phase one also cover associated improvements to several local and access roads adjoining the route. The project is expected to create 328 jobs during the implementation phase.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project "Itinerario Agrigento-Caltanissetta – Adeguamento a 4 corsie della SS640 di Porto Empedocle” is EUR 426 556 002, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 319 917 002 for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
