New sewerage system and improvements to water quality

Work to construct, complete and improve the sewerage system in the Phlegrea coastal area of Campania will directly benefit 9 000 people by connecting them to drainage services for the first time. The scheme also provides for the clean-up of coastal areas and environmental improvements at three lakes.

The project covers the several municipalities along the coast – four of which will have their sewerage systems wholly completed through the programme of works. The following key elements are included in the overall scheme: the construction of a new sewer network; the development of communal mains services; and the restructuring of existing lift stations.

Environmental improvements

The environmental remediation of the Averno, Lucrinus Misenus and Fusaro coastal lakes includes improvements to the control of water flow and the renovation of exchange channels. In addition, the project calls for a 5 km length of coast between Miliscola and Punta Tower "Fumo” to be thoroughly cleaned. Work here includes cutting back vegetation and removing debris brought in on waves.

The scheme is expected to provide work for approximately 120 people during the implementation phase.

This project is part of a comprehensive strategy to improve the water sector in Campania through an investment of more than EUR 500 million, co-financed by European Regional Development Fund.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Rehabilitation and enhancement of Lake Flegrei” is EUR 65 000 000, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 48 750 000 from the Operational Programme “Campania” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period. Work falls under the priority “Environmental Sustainability and Attractiveness of Culture and Tourism”.
