Connecting Campania: access to broadband and digital development across the region

Millions of people are to be connected to high-speed internet services in a drive to improve ICT access and broadband coverage in the region. The project is part of Italy's National Broadband Plan, its strategy to achieve EU targets on broadband development and connectivity.

An investment project in the Campania region aims to see high-speed internet coverage extended to more than 2.7 million people, with broadband connectivity speeds of up to 30 mpbs (megabytes per second); while 480 000 people are set to enjoy connections of up to 100 mpbs.

Alongside residents, the extended coverage is expected to reach 20 hospitals and 1 655 businesses in 119 municipalities, bringing with it economic and business benefits and developing the “information society” in the region.

Open technology

The project involves the construction of a passive network infrastructure to allow operators to provide their customers with access to ultra-wideband high-speed networks.

The infrastructure uses an open technology, allowing all operators to provide their services without any restriction on the choice of technologies. The technical network architecture is known by the acronym FTTx ("fibre to the x") and consists of connecting each “housing unit” – a residential or office unit – to a local access node or communication point. From there, the housing unit is connected to the entire network using optical fibre. Alternatively, the cabinets of the access network are connected in copper and base transceiver stations for mobile telecommunications and "hot spot" WiFi.

The project is part of the National Broadband Plan "Digital Strategy Italy", which will align the country to the EU’s Digital Agenda targets. The project should connect more than 119 municipalities in areas of “market failure”, where private investment has not been available to take forward the ICT infrastructure development.

The project is expected to generate 24 jobs during implementation and 204 after completion.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Broadband and digital development in Campania” is EUR 179 386 000, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributed EUR 91 500 000 through the “Campania” Operational Programme for the programming period 2007-2013, under priority axis “Information Society”.
