Major boost to Greek public services’ ICT infrastructure

A major programme of ICT investment in Greece to upgrade network capacity will ensure that the public ICT infrastructure increases its capacity and service level nationwide. This is to be achieved by providing sufficient bandwidth to support current and future needs, securing public data and facilitate transactions through a modern electronic service.

The project is divided into five subprojects: infrastructure for telephony, teleconferencing, security and cabling; infrastructure for interconnecting network nodes (SIX) and data centres; central services and management; telecommunication services; and wireless telecommunication services, of which only the first three are subject to ERDF co-financing.

For the first subproject, infrastructure includes provision, installation, set-up and maintenance of access and security, IP telephony, teleconference, and telepresence infrastructure. The second subproject involves the creation of the Syzefxis Central Interconnection Infrastructure-SIX (Syzefxis IntereXchange), and Data Center Infrastructure leasing for hosting Syzefxis IT systems, while the third subproject includes the infrastructure installation for the operation of central ISP services and the SLA management.

Improving public service whilst reducing costs

Through the improvement of telecommunication, broadband infrastructure and services for the network, the project will increase the number of connected public authority buildings to approximately 33 753. Consequently, operational costs will be considerably reduced. In all, 24 jobs are expected to be created during the implementation of this project, and 12 new jobs expected following completion.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “SYZEFXIS II" is EUR 172 014 176, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 145 450 887 from Operational Programmes “Digital Convergence”, “Attica”, “Central Macedonia – Western Macedonia – Eastern Macedonia & Thrace”, “Thessalia – Sterea Ellada – Ipiros”, and “Crete and the Aegean Islands”, for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
