New highway A 14 links Baltic and central Germany
The construction of a new section of the A 14 closes a gap between the northern and southern parts of this motorway, which will ultimately connect Schwerin in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania to Leipzig in Saxony. Among the expected benefits are shorter travel times and improvements in road safety.
The project covers the construction of 11.3 km of motorway between the junctions Karstädt and Groß Warnow, and another 1.9 km of national road. It constitutes module 4 of the new stretch of highway, which runs from Magdeburg in the south, where the A 14 crosses the A 2, to Wismar in the north, where it links to the A 20.
The highway is constructed as a four-lane street and optimised for a target speed of 130 km/h. The construction of the two junctions Karstädt and Groß Warnow formed part of the works, as well as 17 engineering structures with a total length of 806 m.
Benefits for all road users
Among the main beneficiaries of the new highway will be the citizens of Schwerin, who will have better access to economically strong central Germany, including the agglomerations Magdeburg, Halle/Saale, and Leipzig, and the citizens of Magdeburg, for whom it will be easier to reach the Baltic Sea. Significant travel time savings are expected both for individuals and for freight traffic, improving economic relations between the regions.
Besides the increase in travel speed, the new A 14 also brings a number of further advantages. As a four-lane highway, it has a larger capacity than the currently existing national roads, and also offers greater safety for road users. At the same time, the strain on the local population is relieved as through traffic will use the A 14 instead of local roads, which improves the flow of traffic.
The new A 14 is part of the EU’s Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) programme, which demonstrates its supra-regional importance. In addition, it already contributes to improving and facilitating the access to the highways A 2, A 20 and A 24, which are key elements of the TEN-T.
The project is expected to generate 328 jobs during implementation, and 417 after its completion.
