Line upgrade to improve connections between Berlin and the Baltic

Measures to renovate and reconstruct a section of rail line between Berlin and the port of Rostock will reduce journey times while improving capacity and safety. The improvements will benefit regional towns along the route as well as long-distance travellers and freight movers.

This particular project will upgrade a 28 km stretch of rail line between Neustrelitz–Kratzeburg and Dannenwalde–Fürstenberg. Work will include replacement of track installations, modernisation of control and security technology, the enhancement or construction of overhead lines, and the integration of electronic signal box technology.

When the project is completed, the rail line will be able to cope with passenger train speeds of 160 km/h, which will shorten journey times along the route. In addition, the revamp will permit an increase in axle loads from 22.5 to 25 tonnes.

Regional benefits

As well as enhancing accessibility on the trans-regional route between Berlin and Rostock, the project will improve rail links at the regional level for medium-sized towns like Neustrelitz and Oranienburg. The revamped line will create an effective infrastructure which can cope with forecasted increases in traffic volumes. The scheme will also improve hinterland connections around the Baltic Sea area.

International travellers will benefit too as the line forms an integral part of the EU-backed trans-European transport network (the so-called TEN-T programme) linking Berlin and Messina through Leipzig/Halle – Erfurt –Nurnberg – Munich – Verona – Bologna – Naples. TEN-T has been established to improve transport infrastructure so as to allow people and goods to move more efficiently and quickly between Member States.

This scheme is expected to create 218 jobs during the implementation and a further 14 during the exploitation phase.

Total and EU funding

The project “Measure network 21, corridor 101, route enhancement Rostock -Berlin, module 1 (sections PA 4S2.1, PA5S1.1, PA 4E1.2 and PA 5E1.1)” has a total eligible budget of EUR 60 823 903, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 21 000 000 for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
