The works involve the construction of a 13.9 km single carriageway with one lane in each direction as well as an overtaking lane. The road serves the purpose of linking both the Altefähr and East Samtens junctions. The residents of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and Berlin stand to gain from the construction.

Part of a wider project

The works are part of a wider project, “Extension of the B 96n from the A 20 (Stralsund) to Bergen”, which connects the tourist island of Rügen to the European transregional road network, the so-called TEN-T programme. Since German reunification, Rügen has become one of the tourist centres of the federal state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Already at an early stage it became clear that the existing transport links to the island would not be sufficient to meet the needs of a steadily growing number of tourists, because the only connection to the mainland was the "Rügendamm” which had been opened to traffic in 1936. The new B 96n federal highway is designed to remedy the situation. This new stretch of the B 96n is key for improving access Rügen by reducing journey times.

Real change, real impact

This project is expected to reduce transport costs due to the aformentioned higher speeds and reduced journey times. Road safety and accessibility looks set to improve. Due to the higher number of road users expected in the area, the local economy also stands to benefit.

As a limited-access road, it will cater to fast-moving and inter-regional traffic. Slow moving vehicles such as public transport will however be able to use the old B 96.

Ramps onto the two junctions are being built as well as other associated facilities. Compensation measures are also being taken due to the impact on the environment and surrounding landscape.  A speed limit of 100 km is foreseen. It is estimated that 152 direct jobs are being created during the project's implementation. In addition, 48 jobs are foreseen once the project is completed.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “New construction of the Federal road B 96n from exit Altefähr to Samtens” is EUR 85 036 000, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 49 400 000 through the “National roads” priority of the “Transport” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period.
