Redesigning roads for safer, faster travel

The design and reconstruction of the Aruvalla-Kose road section and Mäo bypass in Estonia will soon be helping put an end to bottlenecks and traffic delays, a major source of frustration for road users.

The new 4-lane Aruvalla-Kose road section and 6.2 km Mäo bypass, combined with new bridges, noise barriers, viaducts and interchanges, are expected to save time, increase road safety and shorten journeys.

The Tallinn-Tartu-Võru-Luhamaa road connects the Estonian capital Tallinn with Tartu, the country’s second-largest city. Crossing six of Estonia's counties, it is the main link between Tallinn and Central and South-Eastern Estonia. The existing two-lane road is under stress from increased traffic density, with some sections reaching maximum capacity, notably at peak times. The existing 2-lane Aruvalla-Kose section (13.4 km long) will be doubled to a 4-lane, Class I road, while the Mäo area will feature a new 6.2 km, 4-lane bypass, eliminating bottlenecks and shortening travel distances.

Good news for passengers, pedestrians and cyclists

Work on the Aruvalla-Kose section will include improvements made to the road’s geometrical alignment as well as the construction of multi-level, separated intersections with several viaducts and bridges (106 m, 22 m, 28.5 m and 12.2 m long), tunnels (13.5 m and 10.3 m long), 7.1 km of light traffic roads, a 37.7 m tunnel for pedestrians and cyclists – adding to improved traffic safety, and 28.2 km of collector roads enabling the closure of 65 existing unsafe entrances. Environmental aspects are being taken into account with the construction of noise barriers, an ecoduct and wildlife passages. A double-row hedge and trees will also be planted and landscaping works carried out.

Bypassing bottlenecks

The other major infrastructure being developed, the Mäo bypass, will include the construction of a 2.6 km Pärnu-Rakvere-Sõmeru road crossing, 4 viaducts, a bridge over Vodja river, 4.5 km of light traffic roads for pedestrians and cyclists, 2.4 km of noise barriers and 814.1 km of road lighting. Four existing unsafe entrances on the new main road will be closed, adding to greater road safety.

The project will give an added boost to the local economy in terms of employment, with 270 direct jobs created during the period of work construction.
