Road enhancement brings smoother, faster traffic flow
A revamped road section some 10 km south of the city of Ostrava aims to speed up traffic flow and increase driver safety in the Moravia-Silesia Region, with further benefits for international transport.
Stretched out over more than seven kilometres, this major project is a part of the 74.5-km long prepared route of the R48 expressway, in the eastern Czech Republic. Its construction contributes to the gradual completion of high-capacity international motorways in the region – part of the so-called Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) - especially important for long-distance transport eastwards to Poland along the E75 as well as south to Slovakia.
Upgrade and new route
The I/48 national road runs east from near the village of Bělotín to the border with Poland. Only parts of this road are currently designated as ‘expressway’ (R48), capable of carrying high-speed traffic on four lanes.
The new expressway section being built under this project starts near Rychaltice and ends close to the city of Frýdek-Místek. It initially follows the existing national road before including a new route, which passes through agricultural land and built-up residential areas. The entire section will measure just over 7.1 km and feature two lanes in each direction.
The project will make 11 road realignments and build 16 bridges plus a multi-level interchange. A 160-m tunnel is also planned, to facilitate passage through the district of Lysůvky. Housing developments close to the road will benefit from anti-noise protection.
The new stretch of expressway will ensure that the R48 can cope with forecast traffic growth, at regional level and along the E462, the connecting long-distance international route Brno - Olomouc - Hranice - Frýdek-Místek – Český Těšín. Traffic speed and fluidity are expected to improve significantly as a result of this work. Drivers using the road should also be safer, thanks to the directionally separated four lanes, enhanced junctions and exclusion of slow traffic.
It is anticipated that the project will directly create some 140 jobs during the implementation phase.
