The total length of the project is 2 610 m and represents one part of the five sections of the Lety – Nová Hospoda transport infrastructure development. The total project has an overall length of 22 600 m. Once completed, the new junction aims to reduce congestion, cut travel times and have a significant impact on traffic safety.

Operating costs reduced

The construction of a capacity grade junction between the I/4 (that will become the future R4 Expressway) and the I/20 roads is designed to have a significant impact on operating costs. The improved flow of traffic brings with it the added environmental bonus of reducing vehicle emissions in the area.

An estimated 455 000 people live in the residential corridor surrounding the project and the two roads are significant arterial routes between South Bohemia and the Central and Plzeň regions. They provide a further connection beyond the Czech Republic to Germany and Austria.

Major infrastructure investment

The road comes under the ownership of the Road and Motorway Directorate of the Czech Republic (RMD CR) which is a state organisation that was established by the Ministry of Transport. The RMD CR is responsible for the maintenance and administration of the expressways and I Class roads. The budget for this is partly funded through the tolls charged to vehicles using the Czech Republic’s motorway and expressway network. These toll funds also contribute to the initial establishment and operating costs of the toll system.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “Expressway R4 interchange I/20 Nová Hospoda” is EUR 57 343 867, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 22 982 107 through the “Transport” Operational Programme for the 2007-2013 programming period, under the priority “Improving Transport on Class I Roads outside of the TEN-T Network”.
