Transport system advances in Burgas

The public transport system in the municipality of Burgas looks set to benefit from a major spruce up through this project, providing a better service for the 83 000 passengers who use it on a daily basis.

Key components of the project include 67 new buses, a rapid transit route for buses, new and renovated bus stations, cycling lanes and pedestrian overpasses, modern information and ticketing systems and greater accessibility, notably for people with disabilities.

Preparing the way for efficient, accessible journeys

The main beneficiaries of this project are the 318 000 people residing Burgas, notably the 83 000 passengers who use public transport every day, including 3 300 with disabilities, tourists visiting Burgas (120 000 per year in 2009) and the almost 1 million tourists arriving at Burgas Airport who often stay 10 km away from the city centre. The transport system, BRT, will vastly improve transport connections between the city and the airport. By 2013, 33.6 million public transport trips are expected every year.

As part of the overhaul, the current 20-year-old buses will be replaced by 28 articulated diesel buses and 39 single body buses. The buses will have low floors and comply with Euro 5 emission standards or higher. In a bid to ensure rapid and smooth flows, buses will be given priority at traffic lights. Additional features of the works include introducing a rapid bus transit route, constructing and renovating the central bus station, including building a tourist information centre and coffee shop, upgrading the bus depot, making bicycle lanes (total length 20.2 km) and building pedestrian overpasses at four locations in the city.

Almost 1 000 direct jobs will be created, primarily during the initial development given the amount of construction and development work undertaken.

The technical face of public transport

On the more technical side, efforts will include introducing an integrated electronic ticketing system, providing passengers with information in real time at stops and in buses, and setting up an integrated traffic management and control centre supported by video surveillance (CCTV system with 40 cameras at major intersections).

Looking ahead to the distant future, feasbility studies will also be conducted under the project, with an eye on mid-term and long-term objectives, including Park and Ride facilities and an intercity bus terminal, ensuring the region is prepared for future transport demand.
