" As a result of the ERDF-funding, the scientists in CZM have been able to broaden their interdisciplinary research activities, and are now researching multiple subject areas. The project has made cutting edge research infrastructure accessible, which should lead to successful project outcomes. "

Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Wesling, Project manager, Clausthaler Zentrum für Materialtechnik

As one of three research centers of the Technical University of Clausthal, CZM combines the expertise of scientists from various disciplines in the field of materials technology. The focus areas are on metals, ceramics, glass as well as polymers.

Much work is devoted to developing future applications in key technologies through the use of so-called multi-material structures (MMS). These structures combine stiff and compliant materials that can endure extreme conditions and high corrosion stress. They are also extremely light.

The ultimate goal is to develop marketable innovations in key technologies. These innovations will meet the pressing need for new innovations in traffic engineering, information technology, engineering, construction, and energy technology.

The scientists work on challenging and multidisciplinary projects in joint working groups. The universities of Braunschweig and Hannover are also participating in the research, enhancing the German research landscape material technology.

The Clausthal University of Technology is regularly ranked among the top German universities in engineering in university rankings. More than 30 % of students and 20 % of academic staff come from abroad, making it one of the most international universities in Germany.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the “Zentrum für Materialtechnik an der Technischen Universität Clausthal” project is EUR 7 773 150, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 3 886 570 from the Operational Programme ‘Lower Saxony’ for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
