Greater numbers of passengers are expected to benefit from better information services, improved access for those with reduced mobility and faster and safer travel times.

New horizons for rail line

The rail section in question forms part of the Trans-European Transport Network. Problems faced in recent years include significant limitations in speed and load, and train management and communication equipment which is outdated and expensive to maintain. This optimisation project will see the maximum speed allowed increase from 100 km/h to 150 km/h for trains with tilting technology, and up to 120 km/h for conventional trains. One of the main aims of the project is to ensure that the technical condition of the track and the related buildings and equipment comply with European standards.

Network of connections improves access and safety

In an effort to make rail travel easier to access, safer and faster, the project works span all areas of the network. The key work components are: the replacement of the railway superstructure, including switches and level crossings, and improvements to the railway substructure, some 39.84 km in total; new and rebuilt island-type station platforms; the reconstruction of 12 level crossings; and work on 94  bridges and underpasses.

Other work includes putting up noise barriers spanning 9 559 m, installing signalling and crossing safety equipment (6 electronic signal boxes), line signalling (7 track sections) and contact lines (30.382 km on the single track line and 9.456 km on the double track line), and building 1 transformer and converter station.

Taking the green road

The environment has not been overlooked in the project planning. There are expected to be significant noise reductions, improved animal migration paths (new corridors passing under the railroad), and a more competitive position of railway as a sustainable, environment-friendly means of transport.
