Global grants help small, non-governmental organisations, such as voluntary groups and community organisations, to obtain support from the European Social Fund (ESF) and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Ordinarily, such groups would find it hard to access ESF funding directly. Global grants give them an opportunity to bid for small-scale funding (about EUR 15 000) to run projects that help disadvantaged people re-enter the jobs market. The application process is streamlined and administered with minimum red tape.
Intermediary bodies such as local authorities, regional development associations and NGOs manage and implement global grants. The intermediary in question is designated by the relevant Member State or regional authority in agreement with the European Commission.
