The Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission and the General Secretariat of the Central American Integration System established a dialogue on regional policy and border integration in 2015. The dialogue aims to promote mutual understanding and the exchange of information and experience on regional policy and border integration.

At the last EU-SICA High-level Political Meeting which took place in Brussels on 11 June 2015, both sides stressed the importance of regional integration in Central America and the need to continue building the Central America Integration System as the best instrument to jointly face common challenges as sustained economic growth while enhancing social cohesion or the fight against climate change. The EU-SICA dialogue on regional and cross-border policy provides new opportunities for cooperation on these issues, while the new EU territorial cooperation programmes for 2014-2020 involving EU outermost regions also provides opportunities for developing joint projects with SICA countries and others in the region in key fields such as infrastructure, environmental protection or risk management.
