The southern Italian region of Basilicata has several long-standing economic sectors (food, furniture and fashion industries) but in an increasingly globalized world, many were struggling to remain globally competitive.
Although clusters (where similar businesses are grouped together to share resources and services) are generally successful, one shortcoming can be when the clusters consist of traditional companies solely – as in Basilicata. In such situations the cluster can work against them, by keeping new ideas out, and so the companies in the six clusters in this region had become seen as old fashioned.
