€788 million from the Cohesion Fund are invested in three major road infrastructure projects in Poland, which will help strengthen the country's territorial cohesion and improve links with Germany and the rest of Western Europe as well as with neighboring countries in the East.

The first project regards the construction of a section of the Southern Warsaw Bypass, part of National Road 2.  Thanks to the €389.8 million investment, the traffic will be decongested on this road and Warsaw center area, improving the quality of life of the inhabitants of the Polish capital. It will as well support the country’s economic development by providing a fast, efficient and safe transport connection between the West and the East of Europe. The road is expected to be opened for use in September 2020.

The second project consists of the construction of the S17 express road, which includes a section of S12, which will provide better traffic conditions and safety between Garwolin, Kurów and Puławy. The €273.5 million investment will improve freight mobility between the Mazowieckie and Lubelskie voivodeships and towards Ukraine, as well as living conditions and safety in the adjacent areas to the investment. Opening is expected in March 2019.

The road should be open in 2019. Finally, EUR 389.8 million has been invested in a new section of road south-east of Warsaw on the S2 motorway, in order to relieve traffic on the outskirts of the capital. The S2 motorway is located on the North Sea-Baltic corridor of TEN-T, which crosses Europe from West to East, from Ireland to Russia. The works are scheduled for completion in 2020.

Finally, €124.8 million are invested to improve traffic conditions on one of the most important transport routes for the region of Pomerania, which connects the largest cities in Northern Poland. The construction on the S6 express road concerns the section between Goleniów and Kiełpino. The works are expected to be completed in 2019.

Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu said: "The citizens of Poland will be the first beneficiaries of these projects, which will make the roads safer, more comfortable, and reduce travel times, but ultimately it is all Europeans and the European economy that will benefit from better connectivity and its positive impact on trade, tourism and growth."
