The results of cohesion policy investment in 2007-2013 and the main objectives for the use of European Structural and Investment Funds 2014-2020 in Slovenia will be under the spotlight during a special event in Ljubljana on 7 December 2017, organised by the Slovenian government – the Government Office for Development and European Cohesion Policy –, the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food and the European Commission. An "open doors" session will allow citizens to visit important projects co-financed by the EU under the two programming periods, followed by a panel discussion on the results achieved and challenges ahead, with the participation of representatives of the managing authorities, the Ljubljana University and the European Commission.
The projects include:
- The science campus of the University of Ljubljana - Faculty of Chemistry and Chemical Technology (UL FKKT) and the Faculty of Computer and Information Science (UL FRI) – one of the largest ERDF-supported projects in 2007-2013. Thanks to an EU contribution of EUR 46 million to the overall investment of almost 80 million, the university of the Slovenian capital city now has a high-quality educational, scientific, research and development centre. Extending capacity for the provision of University of Ljubljana research and study in the areas of chemistry, chemical technology, computer and information science.
- The BioPharm project – a new generation of biological medicines. The project, co-funded by ERDF in 2014-2020 contributes to one of the objectives of Slovenia's smart specialisation and provides better quality control of the production process, quality tracking, new data analysis tools, simulated production of biological drugs, increase in production flexibility, cost reduction and time savings in production.
Slovenia has been allocated EUR 3.87 billion from ESI Funds over the period 2014-2020. With a national contribution of EUR 1.02 billion, Slovenia has a total budget of EUR 4.9 billion to be invested in various areas. These range from innovation and competitiveness of enterprises to support for SMEs and agriculture and fishery holdings, the low-carbon economy, transport, environment, sustainable employment, social inclusion, education and public administration.
Thanks to the 2007-2013 investment, supported by the EU structural funds, it is estimated that the country's GDP was around 2.5% more than what it would been in the absence of the cohesion policy intervention.
