The Outermost Regions, European lands in the world: toward a renewed strategy

The fourth Forum of the Outermost regions, entitled "The Outermost regions, Europe's land in the world: towards a renewed strategy", was hosted by the European Commission in the presence of President Jean-Claude Juncker on 30th and 31st March 2017.

This important dialogue platform has reinforced the special partnership between the nine regions (Guadeloupe, French Guiana, Martinique, Mayotte, Réunion, Saint-Martin, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands), the European Commission and other EU institutions.

The Forum highlighted the importance of integrating the Outermost regions into their neighbouring markets, as a key element for their socio-economic development, as well as important issues such as digital and physical accessibility, blue growth, green/circular economy and renewable energies.

The Forum brought together the Presidents of the outermost regions, representatives of their three Member States, members of civil society and external actors, as well as representatives of the EU institutions. A very high number and quality of participants (665 present in Brussels and 700 observers in web streaming) show the importance of these debates for the future of these regions.

The work of these two days and the Memorandum by the President of the Conference of Presidents of the ORs addressed to the President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker will serve as the guidelines to be developed by the new strategy of the European Union for the ORs for the next five years, which will result in a Communication by the European Commission in the autumn.
