Programme description

Main objectives

The cooperation programme best known by the name SUDOE addresses transnational challenges associated with the implementation of the Europe 2020 strategy in the south-west of Europe. It supports cooperation in the smart development and sustainable development spheres, focusing in particular on cooperation between the research and innovation networks, by developing the dissemination of applied research linked to Key Enabling Technologies (KETs), and encouraging cooperation between the various departments and institutions that support the development and internationalisation of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). It also supports the dissemination of best practices and innovative solutions for energy efficiency in buildings or consumption of renewable energy, the development of risk management coordination strategies and activities, especially those linked to water resources shortages, and the preservation and promotion of natural and cultural heritage, particularly Natura 2000 network sites.

Priority areas

The programme consists of five priority areas, plus technical assistance for implementing the programme:

  • Promoting innovatory capacity to create smart and sustainable growth (ERDF: EUR 39.5 million)
  • Boosting the competitiveness and internationalisation of SMEs (ERDF: EUR 14.9 million)
  • Improving policies on energy efficiency in public buildings and housing (ERDF: EUR 11.7 million)
  • Preventing and managing risks more efficiently (ERDF: EUR 12.8 million)
  • Protecting the environment and promoting resource efficiency. (ERDF: EUR 21.4 million)
  • Technical assistance (ERDF: EUR 6.4 million)

    • 600 businesses and organisations participating in international research projects
    • 50 services for the development and internationalisation of SMEs
    • 30 pilot actions, tools or services for improving the energy efficiency of buildings
    • 13.5 million people benefiting from transnational action plans for risk prevention and management
    • 50 natural sites benefiting from management processes for sustainable development or environmental protection.
