Programme description

Main objectives

The programme aims to lay the ground for smart and sustainable growth in the region, in line with the Baleares' Smart Specialisation Strategy. It should boost socioeconomic development in the region and contribute to achieving the Europe 2020 targets for smart, sustainable and inclusive growth.

The programme will improve the competitiveness of the regional economy by creating employment especially in activities with high added value as the tourism industry and by supporting SMEs internationalisation. An important priority of the programme will also be to improve energy efficiency in the region.

Funding priorities

Funds are concentrated on a limited set of priorities and investments focused on key drivers for competitiveness, which is one of the main principles of the reformed Cohesion policy. The most important areas of investment of the OP Baleares are:

  • Increase sustainability by reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector and increasing energy efficiency and the use of renewable energies in enterprises and public infrastructures (31%)
  • Improve access to and quality of ICT by developing broadband connection on the islands and strengthen the use of ICT in electronic administration (25%)
  • Strenghten the regional R&D+I system and improve the competitivity of SMEs 16%
  • protect the environment and regional resources 13%

Expected impacts

  • Triple the % of enterprises in the region implementing innovative activities
  • Investment in 1.800 existing SMEs
  • 35.000 additional households with broadband connection (min. 30Mbps)
  • 100% of population covered by e-health services
  • Reduction of greenhouse gases: 3 792 Tn CO2 /year
  • Additional population benefitting from improved waste water treatment: 110 000 persons
