New Cohesion Policy - Portugal
"I’m proud to see how EU funds have helped so many people in Portugal to have a better life, for example the KASTELO project for children in Norte Region. I’m looking forward to the coming debate on the 19 of June, on how the next funding period 21-27 can help Portugal further enhance the impact of EU cohesion policy." Commissioner for Regional Policy Corina Creţu
Kastelo Pediatric Unit for Children with Chronic Diseases
Another cloud with its EU cohesion policy lightning. As the first of its kind on the Iberian Peninsula, the Kastelo Pediatric Unit in Northern Portugal provides health care, maintenance and psychosocial support to children with chronic diseases, with different levels of dependency in hospitalization.
Kastelo has a residence for the parents, a play area with outdoor physiotherapy, an intimate garden, an orchard, a biological vegetable garden and a mini farm with animals, providing the children an environment as similar as possible to a family environment combined with high-level hospital treatment.
This holistic care approach results in a more effective use of resources and shorter hospital stays.
