RegioStars 2012 Winners

Johannes Hahn, European Commissioner for Regional Policy, and President of the RegioStars Jury, Luc van den Brande, former President of the Committee of the Regions, have announced the winners of the RegioStars 2012 Awards. The 5th annual edition of the Awards for Europe's most innovative and inspiring projects supported by European Regional Policy attracted a record 107 application, but 5 deserving projects take home the prestigious trophies. Styria in Austria, Malmö in Sweden, Podlaskie in Poland and two European Territorial Cooperation projects, bringing together partners from 9 different Member States, are the clear winners taking centre stage in Europe.

RegioStars Awards 2012 - 14 June 2012, Brussels
The objective of the RegioStars Awards is to identify good practices in regional development and to highlight original and innovative projects which could be attractive and inspiring to other regions. The deadline for submitting applications for the 2012 RegioStars Awards was 15 July 2011. The European Commission has received a record number of 107 applications. An independent Jury will select a list of finalists, who were invited to present their projects in January 2012. The Jury's decision on the award winners will be announced in June 2012 at the Regions for Economic Change conference.

The Commission has announced the finalists for the 2012 RegioStars Awards. The 24 projects highlight the excellent and innovative work being done on the ground and represent a good geographical spread across the Union. The 24 projects will make presentations to the Jury at an event on 16 January 2012.

The closing date for the 2012 award scheme was 15 July 2011. DG REGIO has received a record number of 107 applications for this 5th annual award.
DG REGIO is now finalising the recruitment of the Jury which shall meet in October. Following the first evaluation of the applications they shall select a list of finalists. All applicants shall be informed of the Jury's decision. The Finalists shall be invited to make presentations to the Jury in January 2012. The Jury's decision on the award winners will be announced in June 2012 at the Regions for Economic Change Conference.

The option "European Social Fund" as EU fund supporting the projects has been introduced in the Application forms as foreseen in the Guide for Applicants - item 2 of "Summary of information".

The RegioStars 2012 Awards for project supported by EU regional policy is now launched.
The deadline for receipt of applications is 15 July 2011.
Award categories
There are five RegioStars Award categories for 2012:
- SMART GROWTH: Innovative projects or schemes supporting service innovation in its different forms.
- SUSTAINABLE GROWTH: Investments in ecosystem services and green infrastructure leading to sustainable regional development.
- INCLUSIVE GROWTH: Strategies, initiatives or projects addressing the challenge of demographic change and supporting active ageing. (2012 is the "European Year of Active Ageing and Solidarity between Generations")
- CITYSTAR CATEGORY: Integrated strategies for the development of deprived urban areas.
- INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION CATEGORY: Informing the public on the internet about projects benefiting from EU Regional policy.
Award criteria
For thematic categories 1-4
- Innovative character of the project.
- Impact (or expected impact) of the project in terms of initial objectives.
- Expected sustainability of the project.
- Project’s results in enhancing local, regional and interregional partnerships.
for category 5 INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
- Effective use of a combination of different internet tools (photos, videos, GIS maps, etc…) to spread information about the projects that have benefited from EU funding.
- User-friendliness of the list of beneficiaries (including data format, search function, frequency of updates, level of project details, etc.).

The ECO WORLD STYRIA project has set out to increase the concentration of successful clean technology (cleantech) companies in the Austrian region of Styria (Steiermark) and ensure that this cluster becomes a top location worldwide for cleantech innovators.

RegioStars Awards 2012: 'Green and Blue Space Adaptation for Urban Areas and Eco-towns' (GRaBS)
The GRaBS project is enabling urban designers, architects and planners across Europe to create or remodel outdoor spaces and buildings to ensure they are resilient to climate change and extreme weather.

Category 3: Inclusive growth – addressing demographic change and active ageing
RegioStars Awards 2012: 'Older people for Older people' (O4O)
The proportion of older people in the European population continues to increase and the O4O project has been examining ways of helping communities provide the required services by mobilising older people to help other elderly people.
