  • Sustainable Recovery? Rebalancing, Growth, and the Space Economy.
    27 November 2014 - 28 November 2014, Holiday Inn London Bloomsbury,London, UK - London (United Kingdom)

Description: This conference provides a platform on which to address the new economic order and its spatial manifestations. The world has seen a series of shifts in socio-economic relations over the past decade, which has picked up pace since the global financial crisis of 2008, particularly in relation to the complex inter-related processes of industrialisation, urbanisation, and regional and local development. Is the mediation between economic logic and political institutions leading to new patterns of economic activity at a local, regional, national and global level?

The 21st Century has been an era of devolution, predicated on ‘realising’ place-based assets and assembling these as the building-blocks of agglomeration for a new brand of local and regional economic development. On the one hand, political devolution has happened through constitutional change (see Spain and current events in Scotland), and on the other hand, economic devolution has occurred through the explosion of state rescaling. City-regions are the outlet for some of this thinking. In the context of urban and regional austerity, post-crisis, politicians and policy-makers argue this is a more ‘balanced’ approach to growth than past interventions. Crisis in the Eurozone though is having highly differentiated impacts, with some places benefiting, while others have seen a worsening of problems. These outcomes appear complex, and relatively unpredictable, challenging prevailing narratives of places and their future. This begs the question as to whether recovery is sustainable and/or is spatially selective growth occurring at a cost?

This Regional Studies Association Winter Conference 2014 presents a timely opportunity to discuss these issues, to establish the need and nature of future research imperatives, and to address the concerns and challenges confronting policymakers and practitioners. The conference organisers are keen to attract papers and sessions which address a broad research and policy agenda, including contributions from any discipline which can offer relevant insights associated with the remaking of the world space economy and its shaping of our cities and regions.

•EU and OECD agendas for Smart, Inclusive, and Sustainable Economies
•Modelling and theorising the space economy: urban renewal and regional growth
•The future of work and work-welfare regimes: labour market policy, flexibility, resilience or flexploitations?
•New approaches to agglomeration and the clustering of economic life
    •Creative city-regions and urban leadership
•The impacts of devolution and constitutional change on economic policy, and vice versa
•The politics and policies of urban and regional austerity
•Cities, Regions, or City-Regions: searching for scalar and institutional fixes
•The lived experience of urban and rural change in times of austerity
•Post-suburbia and governance of metropolitan areas
•Social enterprise, the third sector, and alternative economic geographies
•New industrial spaces of the 21st Century and the future of old industrial regions
•Low Carbon Futures: Green deals and beyond
•Methodological challenges for studying crisis, austerity, and the space economy

  • KARIM – Boosting the competitiveness of innovative SMEs in Europe
02 October 2014, Palais des Académies
Rue Ducale 1, 1000 Bruxelles, Belgique - Brussels (Belgium)

Description: Manage for today, lead for tomorrow – the success of every SME is built on this premise. Yet today’s economic context coupled with growing global competition has made it all the more challenging for Europe’s SMEs to survive let alone thrive. That’s why the support network developed by KARIM, an EU initiative set up in North West Europe, has been so instrumental.

The KARIM Conference taking place on 2 October 2014 is inviting innovation enthusiasts and practitioners to come along for fresh insights into ‘Responsible Innovation’, a new philosophy that the EU is firmly supporting.

    Perspective(s) on Responsible Innovation

Set up to assist SMEs in North West Europe, KARIM has made a significant breakthrough in the innovation landscape by considering ‘responsibility’ from the perspective of those behind it - entrepreneurs and researchers.

Its new guidance book, ‘Responsible Innovation in the context of the KARIM project’, proves there is competitive advantage by innovating using new technology from universities in a way, which considers the impact of innovation on society, groups within it and the environment. Such is the evidence that the EU has invested in KARIM to encourage wider adoption of responsible innovation.

Organised as a part of the European SME Week, this one-day event will showcase and evaluate the projects achievements across three areas of activity:

    Knowledge base

Complementing the guidance on Responsible Innovation, the project has conducted transnational research to answer a series of questions related to SME & labs international cooperation: How do SMEs build cooperation in KARIM regions, how do they prepare to go international, what is the available support in their jurisdictions? What is the role of spinoff in technology transfer in the several KARIM regions and their experiences in the technology transfer from academia to industry?

    Capacity building

In just over two years, KARIM has proven the value of transnational cooperation between academia and innovation support organisations to foster cross border partnerships between labs and SMEs.

    SME support

KARIM provides transnational support to SMEs in order to enhance their involvement in European cooperation. This support builds on tools dedicated to business development managers, students with a collaborative placement scheme, SMEs responsible innovation diagnostic, (…)

  • CAAC Working Group Creative Cities
19 September 2014, Plymouth College of Art - Plymouth (United Kingdom)

Description: On September 19, to coincide with the Ocean City Festival and the new round of European funding programmes, the city of Plymouth and Plymouth College of Art are hosting a meeting between stakeholders across the European Atlantic Sea Board, linked to the Creative and Cultural Industries.

Plymouth is establishing itself as more of a European hub for business and visitors, through which the creative sector will play an important part. Yet, there still remains a lot to be learned from other cities that have been successful in communicating their cultural offer and using culture and creativity as a platform for not only increasing quality of life and well-being, but also for “hard growth” and investment from the business community to ensure better and more evenly distributed prosperity.

Looking to the Conference of Atlantic Arc Cities for inspiration, Plymouth College of Art will play host to a conference on Creative Cities in the Atlantic Area, to learn from each other, share best practice and form closer links for mutual benefit, both culturally, as well as socio-economically, through collaborative projects.

  • Diverse Regions: Building Resilient Communities and Territories
15 June 2014 - 18 June 2014, Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Business - Izmir (Turkey)

Description: Diversity within regions is often considered one way to achieve sustainability and stability in economic growth and development. As a region’s social and economic structure becomes more diverse, it becomes less sensitive to external shocks. Variety in economic activities as well as divergent local cultures within the region is a source of regional strength and resilience. The concept of resilience has often been used in regional development to define robustness, strength, flexibility and the ability to respond to external shocks. Building resilient regions is seen as particularly important in the wake of the global economic crisis as a new source of economic growth. This objective is emphasized both by the OECD’s agenda for stronger, cleaner and fairer economies and by EU2020’s call for smart, inclusive, sustainable economies. The objectives in both agendas are complementary.

The Regional Studies Association European Conference 2014 on ‘Diverse Regions: Building Resilient Communities and Territories’ presents a timely opportunity to discuss these issues, to establish the need and nature of future research imperatives, and to address the concerns and challenges confronting policymakers and practitioners.

Contributions are invited which fit with the following themes, to collectively explore and discuss these key issues from a multitude of perspectives and with different theoretical stand points and with empirical observations from different parts of the world. Selection of abstracts will be based on originality and interest, subject balance and geographical spread. Abstracts should not exceed 800 words.

For two years, a team of thematic experts have been analysing, benchmarking, and capitalising on the wealth of knowledge generated by projects working on similar regional development issues.

This one-day event will showcase policy recommendations and lessons learnt resulting from the analysis of the projects.

  • Regional Studies Association Global Conference 2014 From Vulnerable Places to Resilient Territories: The Path to Sustainable Development
    27 April 2014 - 30 April 2014, Fábrica de Negócios - Fortaleza (Brazil)

Description: In a world emerging from widespread crisis, some regions thrive and have been strengthened whilst others struggle to recover. Unforeseen events affect regions unevenly, presenting at once opportunities and challenges, prosperity and deprivation. How regions emerge from negative or positive shocks depends on their capacity to learn from their own experience and from that of others, as well as their ability to adapt to new environments in a global economy.

The RSA 2014 Global Conference in Brazil will focus on thinking about paths, policies and ideas to strengthen vulnerable places and to develop cohesive and resilient territories. We acknowledge that only adaptive and flexible regions can succeed in an ever-changing world. This conference offers to all those who share an interest in regional and urban issues an opportunity to explore and discuss these key issues. Our discussions will be stimulated and enriched by the RSA’s well established tradition of embracing and accepting diverse perspective, disciplinary backgrounds and ideas.
