Meeting between Michel Barnier and European Mayors and Presidents of regions on the future of cohesion policy

17 February 2003, Brussels

With a view to enriching the debate on the future of Cohesion Policy after 2006, Commissioner Barnier organised an interview with some 50 presidents and leaders of regions and local authorities of the European Union and candidate countries, in Brussels on 17 February 2003.

These regional and local authorities, invited by the Commissioner on a personal basis, represented a highly differenciated range of regions and towns of the present and future Union, in terms of size, socio-economic, cultural and geographical characteristics. This permitted an open and rich debate which covered all the fundamental questions of the future of Cohesion Policy, from the content point of view as well as covering implementation issues.

The Commission received about thirty written contributions from the participants of the meeting which are reproduced below.
