Wastage from cheese production can now be recycled for manufacturing eco-plastic.
This new technology, developed by the Wheylayer project, uses whey collected from cheese-making to extract pure milk serum.
This is then used to create a multi-layer plastic film ideal for packaging which is both air-tight and water-resistant.
The EU has contributed over €4 million to the research.
