Smart irrigation bears fruit

EU-funded researchers develop a technology that can save 1,500 trillion litres of water annually

An EU-funded research project, WATER-BEE, has developed a wireless irrigation system that helps farmers decide, via a smartphone application, which specific field areas to water, and when.

This new water saving technology, which can decrease global agriculture waste estimated at 1,500 trillion litres a year, is expected to be commercialised by the end of 2013.
