An EU-funded project, UnderSafe, develops a first monitoring system to alert tourists visiting below-surface attractions in case of danger.
According to the UnderSafe researchers, the system measures temperature, senses dangerous gases, detects landslide movements, and even calculates how many tourists can visit the site at once without destroying its environment.
The scientists have also designed a special ‘bracelet’, which alerts the central monitoring system in case if a tourist gets lost, stops moving for a long period of time, or falls behind the group.
First trials proved to be a success. The technology is expected to hit the market in 2015.
