Bees received training in landmine detection

Bees received training in landmine detection

EU-funded researchers involved in the TIRAMISU project, managed by the REA, bred a colony of bees that can detect buried landmines from 4.5 km away, and save lives.

The bees are fed with a special mixture of sugar with the smell of explosives, which triggers them to recognize the odour of chemicals emitted by landmines, and fly towards them.

Bee breeding is one of the methods being developed in the project, which aims at finding new landmine detection technologies in post-war zones without putting human lives at risk.
