Unveiling planetary treasures in 3D

Researchers designed an imaging system which gives 'volume' to pictures and transforms them into 3D models

Photos taken during planetary missions can be now transformed into 3D landscape models.

This is possible thanks to a new imaging system developed by the EU-funded project ProVisG.

The new technology can also be used in other applications.

It could help, for example, to document the devastation level in a nuclear disaster zone without the necessity of putting human lives at risk.

First terrain tests were successfully conducted in 2011.
