Mars exploration rover passes its first test

Researchers have successfully tested a rover that could be used for a space mission to Mars

The ProViScout research team, supported by almost €2 million of EU funds, has developed a prototype vehicle for planetary exploration which is expected to prepare the ground for a future European space mission to Mars.

The autonomous small car-sized rover prototype which has been developed, is equipped with 5 cameras and sensors for scientific data collection, allowing obstacle mapping and clear navigation.

The vehicle was successfully tested in September 2012 in a Martian-like landscape in Tenerife, Spain.
