Targeted cancer treatment reduces side effects

Scientists are working to reduce chemotherapy side effects by designing a 'nano-capsule' based drug delivery system

The NANOPORATION team is working on an innovative technique to overcome chemotherapy side effects.

Under this project's cancer treatment method, the anti-cancer substances are placed inside 'nano-capsules'. These tiny carriers deliver the drugs in specific areas of the cell, without damaging healthy tissues.

Thanks to the new technique, still experimental, chemotherapy side effects such as hair loss, weak immune system responses, nausea or concentration problems may be reduced to ensure better quality of life for patients.

The scientists have already gathered evidence that the new drug delivery method is promising. Human clinical trials are expected to be launched in 2014.
