MusselsAlive, an EU-funded project managed by the REA, has successfully tested innovative technologies that could cut waste in mussel production, improve the taste of mussels and, at the same time, preserve marine ecosystems.
The new technology is based on use of various water re-circulation systems, which can help decrease the amount of water and energy needed for mussels farming, as well as improve the mussel cleaning process.
Currently, up to 30% of the mussels are wasted during production. This percentage may now be reduced to boost the efficiency of mussel farming, one of the Europe's major shellfish industries.
